New York Giants Drafted a Returner, Will Domenik Hixon be Shown the Door?
The New York Giants drafted accomplished receiver and return specialist Jerrel Jernigan out of Troy, so does that spell the end of Domenik Hixon’s days with the team? Or for that matter Darius Reynaud and Devin Thomas?
Just to get a handle on what we’re looking at, take a look at not only what he brings in the return game, but his incredible skills in the open field.
2011 NFL Draft: New York Giants Select Maryland RB Da’Rel Scott With 221st Pick
With their final pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected Maryland running back Da’Rel Scott. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to many that the Giants drafted someone to add depth to the backfield, but most people thought it would happen much earlier.
That seems to be the theme of the Giants third day picks. (more…)
2011 NFL Draft: New York Giants Add Depth to Defense in 6th Round
The New York Giants have made it pretty clear which side of the ball they are focusing on in this year’s draft, as they have now spent five of their seven picks on defensive players.
With their three sixth round picks, the Giants selected Michigan State ILB Greg Jones, Iowa DB Tyler Sash, and South Florida OLB Jacquian Williams. (more…)
2011 NFL Draft: New York Giants Struck Gold With First 4 Picks
Could this draft have gone any better? Sure, the Giants could have had Bruce Carter or Akeem Ayers fall to them in the 2nd round, but it terms of straight value, the Giants first four picks look like they went digging for gold, and found it. (more…)
2011 NFL Draft: With the 117th Pick, the Giants Select Indiana OT James Brewer
Well it may feel like “it’s about time” for most of you, but the Giants have finally addressed what was universally accepted as one of their major needs. With the 117th pick, the Giants selected Indiana offensive tackle James Brewer.
He is a load at 6’6”, 323 lbs and primarily played right tackle in college. That combined with the injury issues pushed him down to a 3rd or 4th round prospect, but the Giants are getting a terrific talent if he can avoid injury problems. (more…)
2011 NFL Draft: With the 83rd Pick, The Giants Select Troy WR Jerrel Jernigan
The New York Giants added a weapon for Eli in the future, but in the short term they got an extremely versatile player who’s affect will be felt all over the field. He played QB, WR, RB, and return man for Troy, and show cased his elite speed with a 4.4 40-yard dash at the combine.
The Giants don’t have anyone that can stretch the field from the wide receiver position; Mario Manningham has been that guy but he doesn’t have the same speed as Jernigan. (more…)
2011 NFL Draft: With the 52nd Pick, the New York Giants Select Marvin Austin, DT—UNC
The Giants have selected their second round pick and it is defensive tackle Marvin Austin out of North Carolina. This pick doesn’t make sense at first but when you take a look at what the Giants were dealing with it does.
Akeem Ayers, Bruce Carter, and Ben Ijalana were all off the board, and the Giants had their sites on all three players. They decided to go with Austin for what I believe to be two reasons.
First, he has tremendous value as he has first round talent but dropped due to minor character issues. Second, the Giants need depth at defensive tackle with Barry Cofield likely out the door because of a contract dispute.
Austin dominated when he was on the field, but he missed the 2010 season because he allegedly took benefits from an agent. This was never proven, but the Tar Heels suspended him and several other players for the season.
If this had not happened, it is likely Austin would have been a first rounder. It looks like the Giants are sticking to their guns and drafting the best players on their board.
NY Giants Central’s Live 2nd Round Coverage
Hello readers, I didn’t anticipate covering day two of the draft, but I’ve decided to do an impromptu live chat, especially since the Giants pick is drawing near.

New York Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin Talks About No. 19 Overall Pick Prince Amukamara
If you want to check out New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin talking about the selection of Prince Amukamara, CB out of Nebraska, click here.
Also check out Prince Amukamara addressing the media.
Coughlin has nothing but great things to say about Amukamara and it’s clear when talking to all of the Giants’ brass that they never imagined a scenario where Amukamara fell to the Giants. As you may have seen in my live blog of the draft, as it became clear the Giants were going to have him fall there, I wanted the pick to happen.
It’s also clear the Giants expect Amukamara to be an immediate impact player, despite having three corners on the roster that they already love. Corey Webster and Terrell Thomas had better be in fear of their jobs; Amukamara would have been a top 15 pick if more teams needed a corner.
2011 NFL Draft: At No. 19, New York Giants Select CB Prince Amukamara, Nebraska
I can’t even begin to describe my sheer excitement with Prince Amukamara falling all the way to our beloved Giants. Many people had him slated as a top 10 pick and no lower than top 13, but the quarterback craze took over the first round and the Giants had an outstanding player fall in their lap.
Amukamara is a great shut down corner who can come in and contribute right away, despite the fact that the Giants have two corners they like already. There is nothing more important than having depth in the secondary and it is clear the Giants are worried about how Aaron Ross has slipped in production over the past two seasons.
I know many of you Giants fans will not agree with this pick, but in hind sight this will be one of the best draft picks in the Jerry Reese era, he is that type of player.
Not to mention, if the Giants let him go, there is no question he would have fallen to the Eagles who are in need of a quarterback. That would have not been fun playing against Amukamara and Asante Samuel every week.
Eagles fans have to be devastated thinking once he made it past the Patriots that he was going to fall to the Eagles at No. 23. Not so fast my friends.
Obviously the Giants have to improve their offensive line at some point, but I’ve also been saying this whole time that next year’s offensive lineman look like better prospects and the Giants like who that have on the roster. We will have to wait and see what they do moving forward, but right now this looks like a great pick.
