What about McClain at #15?

Rolando McClain is coming for a visit. One of the largest needs in the upcoming draft, the 6’3″ 254 pound linebacker from Alabama confirmed on Sirius radio that the Giants have scheduled a private workout.

It’s not a done deal that McClain, considered the best ILB in many circles, will be available when the G-men draft at #15, but he’s worth thinking about. The Giants have a glarring hole in their linebacking corp after releasing Antonio Pierce earlier in the year.

Stories broke prior to the combine about McClains’ issues with Crohn’s disease but he claims that should not affect his ability to play at the next level or his stamina. He would make a nice fit in New York as he would carry on the tradition associated with the linebacker position for the Giants.

So what about Spiller at #15?

Do the Giants want a new Earth, Wind and Fire trio in the backfield? Yes, the Giants need help at the linebacer position, but if a dynamic playmaker like Clemson’s C.J. Spiller is available, would you pass on him?

Spiller was the ACC player of the year in 2009 and accounted for 3547 yards and 32 scores while at Clemson. He has a reputation as a homerun hitter and draws comparisons to Tennessee’s Chris Johnson.

While the Giants moved away from being a run oriented team last year, another breakaway threat in the backfield wouldn’t be a terrible thing as Brandon Jacobs really faltered. Yes Steve Smith, Mario Manningham and rookie Hakeem Nicks all broke out with over 2800 total receiving yards and 18 scores, Jacobs was a major disappointment.

2008 was Jacob’s contract year and he responded with a 15 touchdown effort, but injuries plagued him most of the year and by week 10, Ahmad Bradshaw was the focal point of the running game.

PFT.com this morning said that Spiller is racing up draft boards around the league and it’s possible that Seattle might select him with their second pick in the 1st round at #14 overall, but if this talent were still on the board, would Giants fans like to see him in the backfield?

It remains to be seen if Jacobs can regain his 2008 form, and Bradshaw won’t be able to be a 25 carry back, so I say if Spiller is there, pull the trigger.
